The road, to help the child overcome the development delays and Virtual Autism, itself is long and tedious. There are many high and low phases during this journey. Therefore, it is essential that we
Identify the shortest route possible.
Get periodic feedback from the child to check if we are on the right path and do course correction if needed.
Our strategy and approach is based on this.
There are 3 essential principles that we have to follow while helping the child
i) Zero screen time
Screen time is a one way interaction where the child is just consuming the content visible on the screen but is not able to interact with it.
Moreover, the 'children specific content' available on TV and internet is not essentially something that the child can connect with in the real world. You can't find 'Peppa Pig' in real world.
Digital content is always more fascinating than the real world. In the early years, children cannot differentiate between the real and the imaginary world. The more time they spend consuming the digital content, the more attracted they are towards it and become more dis-interested in the real world.
Time spent on Screens is essentially an opportunity loss for the child; i.e loss of time which he can spend while getting inputs from his surroundings and the real world.
Humans have a peculiar characteristic. We always learn something which is of our interest easily and the things which are not of our interest are difficult for us to learn.
We will use this rule for all types of engagements we do with the child. This will be our key to the 'shortest path'.
'Child Led' here means use child's interest as an anchor point to drive the engagement, even it that means deviating from our core objective of interaction or engagement. One example of this for easy understanding - Let's say we are using a ball to play the 'catch and throw' game with the child but the child is more interested in throwing the ball at some target. In this situation, we should not force the child to play 'catch and throw' and rather pivot to 'hit the target' and encourage the child to learn more and more from the later activity.
Important point to note here is we want the child to become more engaged (verbally and non-verbally), social. You achieve this objective irrespective of if you played 'catch and throw' or 'hit the target'.
This will help in building a trusting relationship between the child and you and this will become the foundation of all the engagement that you will be doing with the child during this journey.
iii) Engage child in activities that build neurological muscle
Now we will talk about the actual activities that we have to do with the kid to promote his neurological growth.
